Members of the Green Team’s Garden Group enjoyed a beautiful fall morning while lending a hand and a few rakes to help fellow Phoenixville Borough residents. The Green Team is happy to be part of a leaf raking program organized by Joan McCraken. This free service is available for Phoenixville borough seniors or disabled persons unable to keep up with fall leaf raking.
Phoenixville Has A Winner!!!!!!!!
Phoenixville resident, Ann Caulfield, entered the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s “Gardening and Greening” contest never dreaming that her small garden could compete with the hundreds of other gardens in this very popular contest. Surprised and delighted, Ann recently learned that her garden was selected from over 350 gardens as a Garden of Distinction winner in the 2014 competition.
Ann’s garden is a collection of native trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials chosen for their importance to pollinating insect species. Herb gardens, raised bed vegetable gardens, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries blend with the native plants to add more interest, variety, and functionality to the entire garden. As an avid nature lover, Ann’s borough garden also features habitats for green frogs and turtles. Ann has eliminated nearly all of the lawn on her property. Grass is now reserved for pathways which lead you past whimsical animal statues, birdbaths, chicken coop, and frog pond.
Ann is thrilled to have her Phoenixville garden recognized by the prestigious Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. She hopes that this recognition promotes her message that suburban gardens, no matter the size, can be esthetically pleasing while still providing important habitat for our fellow creatures.
Ann is an active member of Phoenixville’s Green team. You can contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org to exchange garden ideas and to learn about Green Team activities.
